One step closer to compact transparency projectors

Two weeks ago we were talking about building a better projector white LEDs. Gizmodo announces that we are one step closer to this product with a recent innovation that doubles the light per watt from LEDs. That means half as many diodes. Half as many diodes means half the price and half the size for the lighting unit.

I know that in most of my classes at USC, and here in the Penn Law school Transparencys are out. instead a camera is mounted over the desk so that a normal bit of paper can be projected using the digital projectors that most of the nicer classrooms already have.

I have to admit that it makes a lot of sense to do it this way. and with the price of projectors dropping (I bought mine for $500) I think it might finally kill the overhead projector. After all, I think everyone would rather write on normal paper with normal writing utensils. And some people might even use the other features of it being a projector. (power point, movies, etc. though I think that most of these are actually less helpful for learning than just plain writing would be)

On a related, but quite different note, what I always wanted to see was a laptop that had no screen, but instead had a high resolution low power display like a projector. This would allow you to have a reasonably sized screen (so long as you could find some wall) and to get the keyboard at a more ergonomicly reasonable place in relation to the screen. I'm pretty sure we don't have the tech to do it well though.
