The trouble with being earnest

Julian Sanchez in The Redactor’s Dilemma make an interesting point about redacting information that I hadn’t considered, that how you redact information itself can reveal information. In his example, examining the non-secret but nevertheless redacted portions of secret documents sheds light into government activities by drawing attention to areas that otherwise would be beneath notice. The piece is a great piece of document reading kung fu and worth a read just to see a great detective in action.

I hadn’t considered this problem, but I’d long known that it is tricky to classify things properly because sometimes even innocuous information in total paints a full picture of secret behavior, see my post Condemned to repeat it.
